About the Script
Trading fours and Shakespearean verse in equal measure, Hamlet, The Hip-Hopera puts a modern, still-reverent remix on the Bard's classic. The core of the text remains intact (as does its setting), but its means of communication - rap battles, dueling verses, slam poetry - are entirely new. In place of sprawling tragedy is a taut, surprisingly comic, lyrically-driven take on one of Shakespeare's greatest works.
So go on, grab the mic - and speak the speech.
The History of HHH
Hamlet, the Hip-Hopera premiered at Tufts University in November 2011 where it was met with incredible popularity, the likes of which the Tufts theater community had not seen before.
Realizing that they had come upon something special, the show was produced and performed again the following fall and entered into the Region 1 American College Theater Festival, where it won the festival's Merit Award for Outstanding Lyrics and Composition. The playwright, Tucker Delaney-Winn, also placed as a finalist for the Harold and Mimi Steinberg National Playwriting Award.
Over the past two years, Delaney-Winn worked with a team of composers to develop a new, original score for the show. In May 2015, Hamlet the Hip-Hopera unveiled its new score in a public, staged reading at Times Square Studios in Manhattan. The show has was then selected for the 2015 New York International Fringe Festival, where it played in August 2015.
We're always looking for more opportunities to share this production with the world. Please contact us if you're interested in putting on a production of Hamlet the Hip-Hopera.
